Resume Tips

  1. The goal of the resume is to get you a face to face interview, where you can have two-way communication with your interviewer and make a good impression.  A resume by itself is not intended to get you the job. It must give enough information to suggest that you have the skills they are looking for, but not so much information that they pick out a reason why you don't fit the bill.  You just want to catch their intention but leave the in-depth explanations for the interview.

  2. Your resume must be absolutely error free (just in case you run up against an overzealous recruiter).  Some recruiters feel that a person's resume may be the most important document of their life.  They feel that if you can't spell check a document this important, then they don't want you working for their company.  With that in mind, keep the layout simple, headings consistent and spelling errors non-existent.

  3. Include your contact information.
  4. Don't use headers or footers.  This information may get lost when the resume is copied, pasted and forwarded to a decision maker or database.

  5. Include a contact phone number or e-mail address that will stay consistent even if you move.

  6. Include accomplishments with tangible measurements.

  7. Do not trust that charts, tables, bullets, graphics and fancy formatting will look right on someone else's computer.  Keep It simple.

  8. Taylor your resume to the job.  Anticipate what they will be looking for and be sure those points stand out.

  9. Never, never, never lie on a resume.
  10. Get someone to proofread your resume before you send it out.

 Good luck.
