Biography: Mike Bachner
Having been raised on a tobacco and cash crop farm in Elgin County, Mike Bachner says he has agriculture in his blood and under his fingernails.
The journey that led Mike into professional agriculture recruitment services started with a passion for natural sciences and the desire to help others, and he began to contemplate how he could better leverage his ag background.
The next step was the University of Guelph, from which Mike graduated with a B.Sc. in Agriculture with a focus on crop science. His professional career began with the former United Co-operatives of Ontario (UCO) as a retail management trainee and within six months, he had his first sales territory. The years that followed saw Mike in a diverse range of sales and marketing roles including Feed and Crop Sales representative for UCO, Territory Manager with Masterfeeds Limited, Sales Specialist with Ciba Seeds (now Syngenta Seeds) and Ontario Sales Manager for Alltech Biotechnology.
Mike began his transition from sales and marketing to human resources in 1996 as a Consultant Recruiter with Bestard Agricultural Placements, and it was there he found his true calling. As he sees it, recruitment offers a win-win-win situation for all involved – the client who finds a wonderful addition to their team, the candidate who is given the opportunity to grow and advance in their careers and himself, the person behind-the-scenes who is able to facilitate these professional relationships.
In November 2007, Mike brought his wealth of industry contacts, experience and knowledge to the AgCall HR team, as a Partner and Manager for Eastern Canada. Nothing gives him a greater thrill in this role than his involvement in and impact on the industry and people’s lives.
"The synergies and advantages for the business have been significant. The whole is now greater than the sum of its parts," he says. "My primary focus continues to be on the delivery of exceptional customer service – whether it’s helping my client hire the ideal person to fill a critical role on their team, or helping a candidate find the job of their dreams. My role is to help them get there, and offering these services on a national scope is very rewarding.”
Mike lives in St. Marys, Ontario with his wife Cathy, a schoolteacher with a passion for decorating; his son Nicholas, who has a passion for sports and music and his youngest son Michael who has a passion for everything. Mike says his passion is for the three of them.
