Alberta Wheat Commission – Business Development & Markets Manager

The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) is seeking a full-time Business Development & Markets Manager for our Calgary office. We are looking for a results-oriented leader to join our team at an exciting time for the Canadian wheat industry. Growing global food demand is creating new market opportunities for wheat and AWC is leading the industry forward.

This role is ideally suited to a thought leader who is interested in developing relationships and gaining exposure to the entire wheat value chain, including researchers, producers, exporters, life science companies and processors.

Reporting to the General Manager, the Business Development & Markets Manager is a member of the senior management team within the Alberta Wheat Commission. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping AWC pursue its mission to increase the long-term profitability of wheat and Alberta wheat producers through innovative research, market development, policy development, communications and extension.

Working within the strategic priorities of AWC as a whole, the Business Development & Markets Manager is accountable for the development and implementation of AWC’s market development strategy, including recommending and managing the market development budget.

The successful candidate will work closely with our national value chain organization Cereals Canada as part of the Team Canada approach to market development and participate in the planning and execution of the annual New Crop Missions. The position is also involved in developing marketing plans for specific classes of wheat in collaboration with other members of the value chain while working with the Canadian International Grains Institute (Cigi) to showcase the quality and functionality of Canadian wheat. The position is the primary commission contact with international customers and with incoming international delegations.

In addition, the Business Development & Markets Manager has specific project and program management responsibilities related to grain transportation, grain marketing, risk management and price discovery. This includes development of AWC’s transportation policy and oversight of a daily grain pricing website.

The role also collaborates with other value chain organizations in developing policies regarding maximum residue limits (MRLs), recommendations to reviews by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) and other issues that may impact market access for wheat.

The Business Development & Markets Manager also works to educate farmers on knowing the quality parameters of their wheat and leads AWC’s efforts to modernize Canada’s grain grading system to better align with international grading standards.

The successful candidate will work closely with the research and policy functions of AWC on issues that impact the Canadian wheat brand or demand, including priorities for varietal development, registration of new varieties and international trade policy.

·         A passion for agriculture and enjoy working in a diverse, flexible and team-based environment.

·         A desire to gain exposure and work closely with the major players in Canada’s wheat value chain.

·         Well-developed project management, interpersonal and communications skills.

·         Three to five years of experience in business.

·         A university degree in business or agriculture or equivalent industry experience.

·         The ability to interact effectively with producers and volunteer boards.

·         Computer proficiency is a requirement of the position.
