Exeter Produce is seeking an experienced senior farm manager with a strong background in horticulture, agricultural business, farm operations, quality and productivity.

As the senior farm manager, you would be responsible for directing all activities necessary to operate and support our farms at maximum efficiency.  You would accomplish this by working with cross-functional teams to ensure that long-term goals, strategies, plans and policies are followed.  You would also collaborate with the management in creating an efficient operations plan that meets company safety policy and budget standards.

Required skills/experience

Ø  PhD in an agricultural field of study, such as soil science, agricultural business, plant science or agronomy, or equivalent experience

Ø  Experience in managing staff in various areas of responsibility: a team of farm managers, and regular and seasonal employees

Ø  Team player with initiative and sound judgment who is flexible and possesses effective interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as high standards of values and ethics

Ø  5 years or more years of experience in farm production management

Ø  Experience in horticulture

Ø  Strong leadership and decision-making and effective interpersonal skills

Ø  Proven ability to effectively build and manage a team-oriented culture

Ø  Excellent oral and written communication skills

Ø  Experience in budget and farm management to ensure efficient and profitable operations is required

Ø  Ability to identify equipment improvements, changes and or replacements  

Ø  Experience in complete operations of farms, including farm development, irrigation,  application, pest management, fertilizer and seed purchase, training and harvesting

Ø  Ability to plan ahead and to look at the whole picture

Ø  Health and food safety knowledge

Ø  Valid driver’s licence

Ø  Ability to work under pressure

Ø  Willing to work in a rural area and remote locations

Ø  Willing to relocate, relocation not covered by employer

Responsibilities and Duties

The incumbent will

Ø  Manage, direct and coordinate the overall operations of the farms, including farm development, irrigation, application, pest management, fertilizer and seed purchases, training and harvesting

Ø Manage 7 managers and supervise over 85 seasonal workers

Ø  Determine the amount and kinds of crops to be grown

Ø  Organize and co-ordinate planting, cultivation and crop harvesting activities

Ø  Establish marketing programs and goals, direction and vision while strategically planning all projects with the management

Ø  Identify equipment and machinery improvements, changes and/or replacements

Ø  Maintain farm machinery, equipment and buildings

Ø Recruit, hire and supervise regular workers and/or volunteers

Ø  Budget and manage the farm to ensure efficient and profitable operations and ongoing fiscal responsibilities

Ø  Maintain financial and production records 

Hours and Wages

This is a permanent, full-time position. Throughout the year, the incumbent will work 40-44 hours per week. Due to the nature of the business, during farming season, the incumbent will be required to work from sunrise until sunset, including weekends, as our industry is dependent on the weather.

Salary: $75,000.00 per year with a company pickup truck assigned.
